UW Senior Leonard Washington named to to NABC All-District Team

The National Association of Basketball Coaches has named The University of Wyoming’s Leonard Washington to the All-District 17 Second Team.

This is the second year in a row that Washington was named to the squad.  The senior helped lead the Pokes to a 20-14 record and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. He averaged of 12 and a half points and just over eight rebounds a game.  Washington’s 12 double-doubles ranked second in the Mountain West during the regular season.

Cowboys take on Western Michigan tonight

The Wyoming Cowboys will face a Mid-American Conference team in the second round of tonight’s College Basketball Invitational tournament. 

Western Michigan had 21 wins and 12 losses this year and features two solid inside players in Junior Shayne Whittington and Freshman Darius Paul. 

Wyoming Head Coach Larry Shyatt says they will have to be contained.

Pokes beat Nevada in first round

Wyoming Cowboy’s Men’s Basketball beat Nevada 85-81 in the first round of the Mountain West Championships in Las Vegas last night.

Although the Pokes were down by four in the first half, they made a strong showing in the second, at one point holding a double-digit lead. Sophomore forward Larry Nance led the Cowboys with 19 points. 

Wyoming now advances to the quarterfinals where they’ll face number-one seed, New Mexico, at 7:30 tonight.

Wyoming Cowboys Get Ready For CBI

While the Wyoming Cowboys Basketball team did not get invited to play in the National Invitation Tournament, players say they are still happy to be playing in the College Basketball Invitational.  Head Coach Larry Shyatt says the key is that the team gets to keep playing and getting better.  Wyoming center Adam Waddell says it’s nice to play in the postseason.

Kenny Sailors to be inducted to Hall of Fame

Former Cowboys Basketball star and three-time All American Kenny Sailors of Laramie will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri this fall.

Sailors, who is now 91, is the second Cowboy to join. His first college-level coach, Everett Shelton, was inducted in 2006.

“Ev was the greatest coach I’ve ever played for, and I’ve played for about 25, 26 coaches,” Sailor said. “He had a real knowledge of the science and tactics of the game of basketball that I frankly don’t think a lot of coaches have today.”
