Laramie, Wy – The Endangered Species Act has a provision to encourage landowners to help threatened or endangered species. It's called Safe Harbors. And the first agreement in the region involves some private property near Laramie. The landowner allowed scientists to put the nearly extinct Wyoming Toads and tadpoles on the property. Tony Hoch from the Conservation District works with both sides. He says the landowner gets to go about normal activity and is covered from punishment, so if a cow accidently steps on a toad the individual isn't responsible.
The scientists working on this project released thousands of tadpoles that they bred in captivity. Other researchers will survey the ranch to see if any grow into adult toads.
