Wheatland, WY – The first and possibly only Republican running for Governor in 2006 has announced his candidacy. Ray Hunkins, an attorney and rancher from Wheatland, will run for the office for a second time. He finished second in the Republican primary in 2002. Hunkins threw his hat into the ring this time around through a press release, but was in court all day and unavailable for comment. However State Republican party Chairman Drake Hill says Hunkins announcement was met with a flood of calls and e-mails to the party's offices. Hill says Republicans are extremely excited about Hunkins' candidacy. Hill says he's actually heard from members of both parties that are enthusiastic about Hunkins running. Hill describes Hunkins as someone with outstanding leadership qualities and a deep care for the people of Wyoming. Hill also says he's unaware of any other Republicans that are considering a run for Governor this year.
