Lararmie, Wy – Some conservation groups in Wyoming proposed that the state stop feeding elk at three sites. Their goal was to prevent the spread of wildlife diseases. But, the Game and Fish Department said to do this they would have to kill about 1500 elk out of a herd of 4500 in the Gros Ventre area. The Game and Fish's John Emmerich says keeping the sites open does pose a risk because that is the consequence of bringing animals together for feeding, but he says conversely if they don't feed elk many of them would die.
Emmerich says they are weighing the possible spread of diseases like brucellosis and chronic wasting disease with the loss of elk for hunting. He says they will continue to evaluate the decision to feed elk.
