Laramie, Wy – Westbound traffic on Interstate 80 slowed Friday while authorities dealt with a small plane that made an emergency landing on the interstate. It happened about eight-o-clock in the morning, near the Lincoln Monument atop the Laramie pass. The pilot was a 19-year-old from Denair, California. He and a passenger were flying from Wisconsin to California, and had stopped in Cheyenne.
Cheyenne, Wy – Republican gubernatorial candidate Ray Hunkins says Wyoming schools need to emphasize character education as part of the state's fight against methamphetamine. Speaking to reporters in Cheyenne today (Thursday), Hunkins unveiled character education as the final piece of his plan to combat meth in the state. Hunkins has already called for private industry to build regional treatment centers. He's also said he would appoint a single administrator to coordinate the state's anti-meth efforts
Laramie, Wy – Wyoming has a new system set up to check on the abilities of its young students. On this new test called PAWS a lot more kids are scoring at the proficient and advanced levels in math, reading and writing. The person in charge of student assessment for the state, Annette Bohling, says the large gains happened because this new system is geared toward each individual child while the test they used to use focused on testing entire schools. This allows them to know exactly what each child needs to learn and help them be more sucessful on the test.
Laramie, Wy – The Laramie City Council has approved a resolution in support of naming the U-S Post Office building in Laramie after former Wyoming U-S Senator Gale McGee. McGee died in 1992. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1959 to 1977 where his duties included chairman of the Senate Post Office and Civil Service Committee. Laramie City Manager Mark Collins said naming the post office after McGee would have to go through a long process through the federal government for approval.
Cheyenne, Wy – The federal trial in a lawsuit brought by a gay couple who contend neither was fairly considered for a school principal job in Sheridan is underway in Cheyenne. Kathleen Milligan-Hitt and Kathryn Roberts filed the suit against Sheridan County School District two in January 2005. The two argue the school district violated their rights of equal protection, freedom of association and privacy. They are seeking unspecified monetary damages. Lander, Wy – Young drivers continue to be involved in serious automobile crashes across the state but groups are hoping that trend will soon change. Two years ago legislators passed a graduated drivers license bill that will require more driver training. Meanwhile, a law standardizing the curriculum of drivers education instructors also was approved. Lori Pozarik of Injury Prevention Resources in Fremont County believes the new laws will help. But while many support Graduated drivers licenses she says the system only works with parental support.
