Record Sales Tax

Casper, WY – Sales tax collections in Wyoming set a
record in fiscal year 2007 despite a new law exempting groceries from sales tax.

Total sales tax collections in Wyoming were just under $800 million, up 11 percent from the previous year.

Wenlin Liu is senior economist with the state Economic Analysis Division. He credits Wyoming's gas boom. The biggest increases were in the boom areas: Sublette, Johnson, Carbon and Sweetwater
counties.

Delegation Wants Snowmobiles To Stay

Washington D-C – Wyoming's congressional delegation is joining those in Montana and Idaho, in asking that snowmobiles be allowed in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National parks. The delegations made the request in a letter to National Park service director Mary Bomar who is putting the finishing touches on a winter management plan for the two parks. This fall, park
administrators proposed allowing up to 540 of the machines daily in
Yellowstone and 65 in Grand Teton. Only guided trips would be
allowed.

New Pipelines in the West

Washington, DC – The Bush Administration is proposing more than 6,000 miles of "energy corridors" for future pipelines and transmission lines in the West.

The 3,500 foot wide corridors would cross through dozens of sensitive lands in 11 western states. Federal officials say the routes are needed to keep pace with the region's growing population and its increasing oil and gas production.

But environmental groups say it could allow industrial projects to be carved through some fo the most scenic open lands in the country.

Moms Smoke in Niobrara

Niobrara County, WY – One in three pregnant mothers light up during pregnancy in Niobrara County. According to a state report released by a project called Kids Count, that's the worst percentage of pregnant smokers in Wyoming.

Jeanne Peterson works to prevent tobacco use in Niobrara County. She says the numbers are misleading because so few people are pregnant during the year in a county with about 22-hundred people.

The data shows that about 20 percent of pregnant women smoke in Wyoming, nearly twice the national average.

State Economic Outlook

Laramie, WY – A state economic analyst says he expects revenue from natural gas to level off over the next few years.

Buck McVeigh says prices have been steadily dropping at the Opal hub. That's the market where Wyoming sells its natural gas. "Until we see some flow coming in on that Rockies Express Pipeline," says McVeigh, "I think we're going to see a roller coaster ride with Wyoming Prices."
