Greybull group fighting ethanol plant

Greybull, WY – A group of residents in Greybull is fighting against a proposed ethanol plant. Motel owner Michael Lannon is part of the group collecting signatures for a petition against the plant. It would limit the amount of coal the facility could burn within city limits. Lannon says his business will be harmed by the pollution and foul odor emitted during the production of ethanol.

Man Killed On 287

Laramie, Wy – One person is dead after the
semi-truck he was driving rolled over along U.S. Highway 287 near
Virginia Dale and the Wyoming state line.
The crash occurred shortly before 6:00 this morning.
Authorities say the truck was carrying letters and packages for
the U.S. Postal Service, and was fully loaded at the time of the
crash.
The cab was crushed in the accident, and the driver was dead by
the time rescue crews arrived on the scene.
Conditions in the area were snowy but it's unclear what caused
the crash.

Wyoming Faces Boycott

Cheyenne, Wy – Wyoming's policy of allowing wolves to be
shot on sight in most of the state is prompting a call in the cyber
world to boycott the state and its tourism industry.
Vicky Frangos is a former resident of Billings, Mont., who now
lives in Santa Clarita, Calif. She has proposed the Wyoming boycott
on a Web site concerned with Yellowstone issues.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed gray wolves in the
Northern Rockies from federal protection on March 28. Since then,
at least six wolves have been shot in Wyoming.

Groups Win Appeal Over Drilling

Sheridan, Wy – Three conservation groups have won an appeal concerning a number of oil and gas leases proposed for critical winter ranges. The Interior board of land appeals threw out eleven of 12 leases approved by the Bureau of Land management mainly because the agency did not consult with Wyoming game and fish biologists about possible wildlife impacts as is required. Wyoming Wilderness Association Director Liz Howell says the drilling in crucial winter ranges will likely have an impact.

Cheyenne Woman Qualifies For Summer Olympics

Cheyenne, Wy – A Cheyenne archer is going to the Olympics. Jenny Nichols of Cheyenne finished at the top of the women's recurve standings at the U.S. Olympic Archery
team trials in Chula Vista, Calif., on Sunday. Nichols will represent the United States in the Summer Games in Beijing in August.
Nichols won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships
in 2003 and a gold medal that year at the Pan American Games. She
competed at the 2004 Olympics but didn't win a medal.

CBM Producers Ask For More Safety Oversight

Laramie, WY – Coal-bed methane producers in Gillette
told Gov. Dave Freudenthal that they need help to improve working
conditions as new employees continue moving into the Powder River
Basin with little oil and gas experience.
The governor met with members of the Powder River Basin CBM
Safety Council in Gillette on Friday.
Chuck Dobkins is chairman of the safety council and a senior
safety specialist at Williams Production. He told the governor that
there's a lack of government oversight on safety issues.

Wyoming asks Supreme Court to throw out water lawsuit

Billings, Mont. – Wyoming's Attorney General is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to dismiss a lawsuit alleging the state's agriculture and energy industries are using too much water in violation of an interstate agreement.

Montana sued its southern neighbor last year, claiming farmers and other water users along the Powder and Tongue rivers were being harmed.

The two rivers flow from northern Wyoming into southern Montana before draining into the Yellowstone River.

Northwest College in Powell has a new president.

Powell, Wy – Northwest College in Powell has a new president. The vice president for academic affairs at Sussex County Community College in New Jersey, Paul Prestwich, has been hired as the new president of Northwest College in Powell.
Prestwich is expected to assume his new duties by July 1. He
will replace Miles LaRowe, whose retirement is effective June 30
after five years in the position.

Violations At Uranium Mine

Douglas, Wy – The Wyoming Department of Environmental
Quality has found environmental violations at the state's only
operational uranium mine.
The agency has issued a notice of violation to Power Resources
Incorporated, which operates the Smith-Highland Ranch in-situ leach
uranium mine north of Douglas.
The six-page investigation report details several
"long-standing" environmental concerns at the mine. Among them
are delayed restoration of groundwater, "routine" spills, and a
seriously inadequate bond to cover restoration.
