Daddy of Em All having financial problems

Laramie, WY – Cheyenne Frontier Days is having some financial problems. Federal tax returns show the nonprofit rodeo lost 1.4 million dollars between 2006 and 2008.
This is all happening while the 10-day rodeo is bringing in big crowds. Last month C-F-D drew nearly 192,000 people, the best attendance since 1999. But a report shows the rodeo has been spending more than it has taken in for the last three years.

PAVILLION WATER CONTAMINATION

Wyoming – The tiny town of Pavillion, Wyoming has become one site of a growing environmental debate. The Environmental Protection Agency this month found that eleven water wells in Pavillion tested positive for contaminants, including methane. Those wells are concentrated in an area thick with EnCana gas wells, and some residents think drilling is to blame for the contamination. But it's another matter to prove that oil and gas is responsible. Wyoming Public Radio's Addie Goss reports.

WYOMING BATTLES INVASIVE SPECIES

Wyoming – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is dealing with what are called invasive species. That is when non-native plants, fish or other organisms are placed into Wyoming's lakes or streams. Sometimes it is done intentionally, but in many instances it is not. Wyoming Public Radio's Bob Beck talks with Beth Bear, the aquatic and invasive species coordinator for the Wyoming game and fish department.

WYOMING RESIDENTS WANT DISTANCE EDUCATION

Wyoming – Last November the Governor appointed a task for to study and make recommendations on distance education, video conferencing and internet based communications in the state. One of the Co-Chairs was U.W. Outreach School Dean Maggie Murdock. The Task force will make recommendations to the Governor on September 10th. Dean Murdock joins Wyoming Public Radio's Bob Beck in the studio and explains that people in the state say that there is a lot of interest in distance education.

WYOMING ACT SCORES DROP

Wyoming – Wyoming's average ACT scores dropped a full point this year. The average score was 20, out of a possible score of 36. Scores declined in every one of the test's four subjects. But state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jim McBride tells Wyoming Public Radio's Addie Goss that there is a good reason scores dropped: more students took the test.

SHOSHONI WOMAN WALKS ACROSS U.S. TO RAISE AWARENESSS

Wyoming – On September 9th, a 54-year-old woman from Shoshoni, Wyoming will begin to walk across the United States to raise awareness about domestic violence. Until her trip starts, Sharon Alsup is working in a local convenience store and raising money for her trip by selling cookies at Shoshoni's Silver Sage Saloon. Alsup grew up in foster care in Oregon. She tells Wyoming Public Radio's Addie Goss that the idea for this walk came out of how she grew up and the relationships she's had along the way.
