Federal Emergency Unemployment Benefits will be reduced

Emergency unemployment compensation program benefits will be reduced under the federal government’s budget sequester.

Wyoming Workforce Services Director Joan Evans that the program provides unemployed individuals who have exhausted regular unemployment insurance benefits. Evans says the reduction will likely be noticeable.

Wyoming’s economy is slowing down. That’s according to numbers from the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services.

In the second quarter of 2012, job growth was up, especially in the construction sector. Employment increased in 18 Wyoming counties. At almost 1,700 new jobs, Natrona County led the state.

But Department Senior Economist David Bullard says the numbers for the third quarter of 2012 will show a different picture…

Wyoming labor force is shrinking

Although Wyoming's unemployment rate dropped from November to December by 0.2 percent, the state labor force has also decreased by about 2,500 people in the last year, signaling that the economy might be worsening.

The Director of the Wyoming division of workforce services says there are jobs for graduates of the University of Wyoming, but the challenge is connecting the graduate to the job. U-W students graduate this weekend. Joan Evans says that in particular there are a number of science, technology, engineering and math opportunities for graduates.

Wyoming Still Worst In The Nation For Working Women

Wyoming is the worst state in the country for women in the workforce. That’s according to a report in the Atlantic which takes into consideration women’s average wages, their percentage of the labor force and how much they earn relative to their skills and education levels.

Carma Corra with the Wyoming Council for Women’s Issues says one of the reasons women earn less than men is that they tend to hold different types of jobs.
